True Hip-Hop

Photography, Book Signing, and Cultural Arts Panel
July 9 – August 27, 2011
Opening Saturday, July 9, 2011 5-9 pm

ATLANTA, June 15, 2011 – Hagedorn Foundation Gallery and Fahamu Pecou Art, in partnership with i wonder group, are proud to present an exhibition of images by New York photographer Mike Schreiber from his recently published book, “True Hip Hop.” Schreiber will be present Saturday to guide us through his hip-hop portraits, highlighting the notable artists whose lifestyle, beats and rhymes created this popular culture.

The ‘True Hip Hop’ exhibition will open with distinguished artists, entertainers & educators in candid conversation about the impact and influence of black bodies in media and entertainment, and how these images shape the perception of black men and women both inside and outside of hip-hop culture.  Panelists include:

Rodney Carmichael – Music Editor, Atlanta Creative Loafing

Dr. Joyce Wilson, PhD – Morehouse professor; Hip-Hop Archive Fellow, WEB Dubois Institute, Harvard University; author, and co-producer of the Emmy-award winning documentary “Walking With Guns”

Mike Schreiber – N.Y.C. photographer & documentarian

Fahamu Pecou – visual artist, curator and cultural commentator

Portraits of tattooed black bodies, flashy cars and “blinged out" accessories increasingly shape the perception of African American culture both domestically and internationally. Mike Schreiber has captured the raw reality of this culture for more than a decade with images gracing the cover of several leading publications such VIBE, Rolling Stone, SPIN, XXL, and Arise. His collection of mostly black and white images is regarded as undeniably honest and gritty, yet he presents his subjects with great empathy and humanity.

Immediately following the panel discussion, there will be a book signing and reception with the artist.

This panel and exhibition is presented as a part the 23rd annual celebration of the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta, GA (www.nbaf.org)
